Litematica Tutorial: How to Create a Minecraft Schematic

Published on January 13, 2026

This comprehensive guide explains step by step how to use the Litematica mod to define an area, check its loading, and save it as a “schematic” file.

Step 1: Define the area to be saved (Create a selection)

To begin, you must tell Litematica which structure or part of the world you want to save.
  • Open the Litematica Menu
    • The default key is often M or, on AZERTY keyboards, the comma key (,). (Check your mod configuration).
    • Create a New Selection
    • Go to Area Selection / Area Selection Browser (or Area Editor).
    • Click on New selection and give your selection a descriptive name.
  • Activate the Selection Tool
    • Take your Litematica tool (usually a stick).
    • Make sure the tool mode is set to “Area Selection.”
    • Define the Two Corners (Boundaries) of the Area
    • Left-click: Positions the first corner of the area (visible in 3D as a red cube).
    • Right-click: Positions the second corner of the area (represented by a blue cube).
  • The 3D selection box appears.
To save time, switch between Corners mode and Expand mode (often faster for large structures) using the shortcut Ctrl + M (or via the configuration menu).

Step 2: Verifying Chunk Loading (Essential for Large Selections)

Before saving, if the selected area is large, it is crucial that all blocks are loaded into memory:

If Litematica displays the message “Missing Chunks,” move around the area to force the game to load the missing chunks. The save cannot be completed until the area is fully loaded.

Step 3: Save the Selection as a Schematic File

Once the selection has been correctly defined and loaded, you can save it. There are two ways to do this:
  • Via the interface: In the Area Editor, locate and click on the Save Schematic button.
  • Via keyboard shortcut: Use the key combination Ctrl + Alt + S to open the save screen directly, then click on Save Schematic.
Finalizing the Save:
  1. Choose a relevant file name for your schematic (and adjust the options if necessary).
  2. Click Save Schematic, and the schematic creation is then sent to the task manager to finalize the save. If your selection is small, the schematic will be created instantly; otherwise, you will need to manually move around your world to load the chunks.
The file is now saved and can be accessed via the Load Schematics menu in Litematica or directly in your game files, as shown in this tutorial.

Step 4 (Optional): Change the default settings

Here is a short list intended to address the most frequently encountered issues: If you want to disable the permanent display of the selection box in your world:
  • Return to the Area Selection browser and delete or disable the selection you just saved.
If your keyboard shortcuts do not match those indicated:
  • Litematica hotkeys are configured directly in the mod’s menus (and not always in the standard Minecraft controls).
  • Go to the Litematica configuration menu, then to the Hotkeys section to view or modify the assignments.
